Wet track conditions cancel IndyCar qualifying, Castroneves on pole

bilde19 Wet track conditions cancel IndyCar qualifying, Castroneves on poleSunday’s IndyCar Series race at Iowa Speedway will start with the cars lined up based on entrant points–but not because Saturday’s qualifying session was rained out.

No, water of a different kind was the problem.

In this case, a high-water table from storms earlier in the week caused seepage that could not be corrected in the track’s fourth turn. Officials tried to run a couple of cars through it Saturday evening, but it could not be resolved.

More rain is in the forecast Saturday night, putting the Iowa Corn Indy 250 in doubt.

Helio Castroneves will start on the pole due to having the most entrant points. Will Power helped with that, finishing sixth in the season-opening race in St. Petersburg, Fla., when Castroneves was on trial in his federal tax-evasion case in Miami.

Fellow Team Penske driver Ryan Briscoe, who leads in driver points, will start second. Ganassi Racing teammates Scott Dixon and

Dario Franchitti will start together on the second row with Danica Patrick fifth.

Marco Andretti had Saturday’s only accident, a heavy hit in the second turn. A rear wing failure is believed to have caused the massive hit. He was not injured and will start in a backup car.
