BMW X1

Here’s the first official teaser video for the new BMW X1. Originally unveiled as a concept at the Paris Motor Show last year, it’ll be unveiled as a production reality at the Frankfurt Show in September and reach British showrooms in October.
Judging by this thinly disguised video, it doesn’t seem to have changed massively from the original, controversial concept. Many of the styling cues have been clearly influenced by the forthcoming 5 Series GT and recently released 7 Series, such as the gaping kidney grill. The concept looked like it had been whacked with the ugly stick so let’s hope BMW’s had a rethink. Otherwise, the Munich boffins might be best served keeping that camouflage firmly in place.

Concept was a bit of a munter
The X1 is based on the 3 Series so it should at least be good to drive. BMW expects the 175bhp 2.0-litre diesel from the 120d to be the biggest selling version. The entry-level car will cost around £25k and will be rear-wheel drive, with four-wheel drive as an option. Other choices will include the 201bhp diesel from the 123d and a couple of petrol engines.
The X1 should appeal to those who want more versatility but can’t quite stomach a proper SUV.
